The Fast & Furious franchise has been a massive success over the past two decades, and there are plans to expand it with additional spinoff movies. Universal is approaching the conclusion of the main Fast Saga with Fast & Furious 11, but there are other entries in development. One of these includes Dwayne Johnson’s new Fast & Furious spinoff following his surprise return in Fast X, as well as the long-discussed all-female spinoff movie. However, there is a strong case to be made for Jason Statham’s Deckard Shaw to be the next character to receive a standalone adventure.
Jason Statham’s recent box office success with his action movie, The Beekeeper, which has made over $135 million worldwide, proves that a Jason Statham-led Fast & Furious spinoff could succeed. Statham’s star power and financial track record make him a viable option for a franchise outside of the Fast & Furious series. Instead of Statham continuing to explore other franchises, Universal should capitalize on The Beekeeper’s success and move forward with a Deckard Shaw spinoff.
It’s surprising that a Deckard Shaw spinoff hasn’t happened already, considering that every Fast & Furious movie Statham has appeared in has grossed at least $700 million worldwide. His role as the main villain in Furious 7 helped the film break franchise records, and teaming up with The Rock for Hobbs & Shaw earned Universal $760 million. A Shaw spinoff film could even reunite Statham with director David Ayer, who worked on The Beekeeper and has a history with the Fast & Furious franchise.
The Fast & Furious franchise has already set up the story for a Deckard Shaw-led spinoff. In Fast X, Statham’s character leaves to find his family and ensure their safety from Jason Momoa’s villain, Dante Reyes. The franchise has introduced three members of Shaw’s family: his sister, Hattie (Vanessa Kirby), his brother, Owen (Luke Evans), and their mother, Queenie (Helen Mirren). Shaw’s mission to find his family provides an ideal storyline for a spinoff after Fast X.
A Shaw Fast & Furiоus spinоff wоuld greatly benefit frоm having a prоven bоx оffice star like Jasоn Statham in the lead rоle. Appearances frоm Kirby, Evans, and Mirren wоuld alsо enhance the film, and suppоrting characters like Madam M (Eiza Gоnzálеz) cоuld make a cоmeback. All that’s needed is Universal’s interest in a spinоff centered arоund Statham’s character, and there’s nо reasоn tо hоld оff, especially after seeing the success оf The Beekeeper.
